No one likes dealing with home repairs. While minor issues are annoying, larger structural problems are more difficult and expensive to address. In some scenarios, seemingly negligible symptoms are a sign of larger problems. Here are a few signs of structural problems to look out for in your house.
1. Mud Tubes on the Foundation
Mud tubes are a noticeable sign of a termite infestation. Termites build mud tubes to protect themselves from heat and sunlight. The tunnels are about a quarter of an inch wide. An unchecked termite infestation is sure to cause structural issues, so contact a pest professional if you see these tunnels.
2. Sloping Floors are Signs of Structural Problems
You probably don’t check your floor with a level to make sure that it’s even. However, you might notice if your floor is sloping if objects always roll to one side when dropped. A sloping floor may be due to foundational shifting or broken and rotting support joists.
3. White Residue on Brick Chimneys
A brick chimney may develop a white residue on the exterior. This is caused by moisture which draws the mineral salts to the surface. The residue itself isn’t harmful and you may notice small amounts without any signs of structural problems. However, this residue is a sign that the chimney isn’t properly sealed and can let moisture in, causing structural problems. You’ll want to have a professional chimney inspector inspect the chimney.
4. Signs of Structural Problems May Include Slow Drains
The pipes of your home should drain promptly. Sometimes you’ll notice that the occasional sink or tub doesn’t drain quickly. This could be an isolated clog and isn’t much of a concern. However, if you notice that most of the drains are slow, the sewer line may be damaged. A damaged sewer line is a sign of a structural problem that can rapidly get worse.
Your home is one of your most valuable assets. Being aware of the more common signs and symptoms of structural problems is important. Use these tips to catch serious structural problems early.
